Therapy · Areas of application
At the startof the causal chain.
Breathing, swallowing and head balance stand at the start of long causal chains. As a neurophysiological causal therapy, FaceFormer therapy works at this level of causes. That is why it is used in many specialist fields, from speech therapy to sleep medicine.
Many complaints can be linked to the triad.
FaceFormer training aims to restore the basic functions of breathing, swallowing and head balance to a physiological state, with lip closure and the tongue reference position. In doing so, it creates the conditions under which complaints can improve. How far this succeeds depends on many factors.
Areas of application
Where FaceFormer therapy is used
The overview follows the FaceFormer exercise instructions. There are detailed articles on many of the topics.

Breathing
Breathing and sleep
- Switching from mouth breathing to nasal breathing
- Snoring and breathing pauses at night
- Breathing disorders and asthma
In cases of sleep apnoea, sudden hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and paralysis, a medical assessment should come first.

Swallowing
Mouth, tongue and swallowing
- Swallowing disorders
- Tongue dysfunctions
- Impaired chewing function
- Functionally caused language, speech and fluency disorders
- Giving up dummies, thumb-sucking and lip-biting
- Paralysis of the mouth or face, for example after a stroke

Swallowing · Head balance
Teeth and jaw
- Tooth misalignments and jaw anomalies
- Teeth grinding and teeth clenching
- Craniomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and jaw joint complaints
- Dental prosthetics and implants
- Before and after surgery on the face, jaw or tongue
Alongside braces, splints and prosthetics. Please do not discontinue medically prescribed treatments on your own.

Ear and balance

Head balance and posture

All three
Other fields
- Saliva production and metabolism
- Diabetes and reflux
- Functional cosmetics
- Wrinkles on the face and neck
For professionals: For patients who cannot actively cooperate, for example those in a vegetative state or in need of care, the FaceFormer can be placed in the oral vestibule. There it protects the lip from bite injuries and provides stimuli for the function of the muscle chains. One application takes about 30 minutes and is carried out exclusively by trained professionals.

Why so many areas
From the level of symptoms to the level of causes
Breathing, swallowing and head balance secure oxygen, food and the body’s position in space. If their pattern deviates, the body compensates, often for years. At the end of the causal chain, the consequences can show up in very different places: in the jaw, in the ear, in sleep or in the neck.
Each of these complaints has its own specialty and its own procedures, and that is a good thing. FaceFormer therapy complements them at the beginning of the chain, at the shared control pattern. Dr. Berndsen calls this a return to the reference order.

For many topics there is a video
On the YouTube channel “Gesundheit braucht Verstand” (Health needs common sense), Dr. Klaus-Jürgen Berndsen explains the connections behind many of these areas, from middle ear infections to braces and sleep.
Questions
Frequently asked
Will the FaceFormer help with my complaints?
There is no general answer to that. Whether and to what extent your complaints are connected with breathing, swallowing and head balance can be shown by an assessment at a practice from the practitioner directory.
Does the training replace medical treatment?
No. It complements it. Please do not stop medically prescribed treatments such as a splint, a breathing therapy device or braces on your own.
My topic is not on the list
