A mother on training for her son’s LKGN malformation
Son with a left-sided LKGN malformation, open mouth, no nasal breathing, drooling, middle ear effusions and poor speech quality despite speech therapy; switched to the ISST at the age of three.
“It is certainly not always easy to practise consistently with a (young) child, but it pays off.”
My son (9 years old) was born with a left-sided lip, jaw and palate malformation. A craniomandibular dysfunction (TMD) also quickly became apparent. His mouth was constantly open, his tongue hung limply out of his mouth, and constant drooling and very poor speech quality were the result. Jaw misalignments were bound to follow. At the same time he always had a cold, and without grommets new effusions quickly formed in the middle ear. This was seen as a consequence of the anatomical anomaly, but also of the complete lack of nasal breathing. Despite conventional, consistently carried out speech therapy, there was little to no success.
Only the switch to ISST Berndsen at the age of 3 brought the turning point. Establishing the FaceFormer day and night and consistently doing exercises 3 times a day as instructed by Dr. Berndsen showed clear improvement after just a few months, especially in speech quality. The drooling also stopped quickly. The exercises continue to this day, but they are integrated into everyday life and my son now does them almost on his own. Even a major speech-improving operation was avoided through consistent use of the FaceFormer and the exercises.
Conclusion: Had we known earlier that the FaceFormer and the ISST existed, we would have opted for it straight after birth. It is certainly not always easy to practise consistently with a (young) child, but it pays off. Many heartfelt thanks to Dr. Berndsen and the whole team for their patience and highly competent care. Anyone who does not know his history would not notice it in our son, not least thanks to the scientifically based concept behind the FaceFormer.
