Choking – Do you always notice it?
Question
Very stupid question, but… I have the feeling that swallowing is not working properly. My question now: do you notice when you choke (so yes, clearly coughing etc.) or can I not notice if I choke?
Answer
In principle, swallowing always works, we need it for nutrition. Nevertheless, there are deviations in the swallowing process that need to be adjusted. They cause symptoms of illness: although the swallowing act is successful, the movements in the mouth and throat deviate from normal and are performed in a compensatory manner (with the wrong pattern). Swallowing without realizing it is also possible. This is referred to as “silent aspiration”. This means that no cough reflex occurs when swallowing. What does not enter the oesophagus during swallowing but accidentally enters the windpipe remains in the airways. This is a problem that should not be underestimated because it can cause pneumonia.
