The trigeminal nerve is the fifth of a total of twelve cranial nerves and has the special property that it leads directly into the brain without being switched in the spinal cord. It consists of three branches – the ophthalmic nerve, the maxillary nerve and the mandibular nerve – which each supply different areas of the face. The trigeminal nerve is responsible for the sensitive perception of temperature, touch and pain in the face and at the same time controls the movement of the facial muscles.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition that causes severe, stabbing pain in the area supplied by the trigeminal nerve. The pain can be caused by various factors, such as inflammation, pressure on the nerve or damage to the protective myelin layer of the nerve. The exact cause of the pain is often difficult to find and can be clarified by a doctor.

Treatment options

There are various approaches to treating trigeminal neuralgia, such as drug therapy, thermal procedures or even surgery. In many cases, however, no clear causes can be found, which is why symptom-oriented therapies promise little success and cause-oriented therapies must be considered.

FaceFormer® therapy

FaceFormer therapy is a method that aims to correct the basic functions and movements of the face and thus reduce any pressure on the trigeminal nerve. By training with the FaceFormer, the system can be slowly readjusted and the pressure points on the nerve reduced. However, this process of adjustment requires continuous training to be successful.
