Does FaceFormer® therapy have an effect on diabetes?
A medical opinion
A medical opinion
Patients who were treated with FaceFormer therapy for swallowing disorders and sleep apnoea syndrome and who were also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus not only showed significant improvements in their swallowing and breathing performance, but also a positive effect on their diabetic metabolism. Blood glucose levels and the long-term HbA1-c value improved by around 10-15% as part of the FaceFormer treatment. Medication could be reduced or even discontinued in these patients.
FaceFormer training stimulates the vagus nerve. This raises the question: could the FaceFormer treatment be a complementary therapy option for the treatment of diabetes patients, supporting or even replacing drug therapy with antidiabetics? This positive effect of the FaceFormer on sugar metabolism can be explained hypothetically as follows: FaceFormer therapy has a stimulating effect on the inner pharyngeal throat muscles and the corresponding nerve structures. The vagus nerve is activated, which has an activating effect on the gastrointestinal muscles and their mucous membranes.
According to the latest findings, the secretion of incretin in the mucous membranes of the small intestine plays an important role in sugar metabolism. The incretins released reactively in the small intestine after a meal have a blood sugar-lowering and therefore anti-diabetic effect. Gliptins, DPP4 inhibitors, are used successfully today according to this principle of action.
The incretins have a stimulating effect on the beta cells of the pancreas, leading to an increased release of insulin and consequently to a reduction in blood glucose levels. In addition, an effect of incretins on the alpha cells of the pancreas has been demonstrated, resulting in a reduction in gluconeogenesis with a reduction in the formation of new glucose. Furthermore, there is an improvement in the diabetic metabolic situation due to an increased uptake of glucose into the cell and its metabolism.
To summarise, it can be said that the FaceFormer causes an increase in incretin release via intraoral stimulation of the vagus nerve. This leads to an increase in insulin production, a reduction in gluconeogenesis, an improvement in the introduction of sugar into the cell and thus to a significant reduction in blood sugar levels.
FaceFormer training has a stimulating effect on the vagus nerve
The positive effect of the FaceFormer on diabetes metabolism is an empirical finding that should be definitively proven by scientific studies.
